The Google Bookmarks free online bookmarking service (it is different than the browser-based bookmarking in Google Chrome and should not be confused with Google Chrome) has been around since 2005. Google Bookmarks will be shut down on September 30, 2021.

Many users started to export their bookmarks from Google Bookmarks and after they imported the bookmarks into another bookmark manager or browser they realized that a lot of bookmarks got duplicated.

Unfortunately it’s a design flaw in Google Bookmarks. When you save a bookmark in Google Bookmarks with multiple tags, Google Bookmarks creates multiple copies of the bookmark: Let’s say…

A few weeks ago I posted about Booking Fellow (an online appointment booking service) going to Beta then going to production. I was very excited about this project, I spent a whole year to develop it (not full time, I also developed new features for Bookmark Ninja parallel). In September 2018 my wife joined me and she worked 6 months on designing and coding the entire UI of Booking Fellow. We put a pretty big amount of effort into this project.

Today I shut down the server — Booking Fellow is not live now

Wow, it sounds unreasonable, right? Why did we do this? Here are the reasons of the big decision.

Reason #1

The…

Our new project, Booking Fellow went live and the Beta program started:

https://www.bookingfellow.com

We are looking for Beta participants, if you know someone who would be interested in using such a service and would signup for the Beta then please share it with them. We would really appreciate your help, thank you!

What is Booking Fellow?

Booking Fellow is an online appointment booking service for small and micro businesses like hair and beauty salons, barber shops, lawyers, consultants, car repair shops, tire shops, doctors, dentists, health and fitness clubs (squash/tennis court booking) etc. …

I downloaded an archive of our Bookmark Ninja web application project to check something and started to unzip the file. The unzipping process was extremely slow. Then I figured out what made WinZip run so slow…

A reason of the extremely slow unzipping on Windows can be Defender that runs in the background and scans each file.

This usually happens when you try to unzip a file that was downloaded from an online storage (e.g. from Google Drive) or you received it as an email attachment.

To get around this problem, follow the steps below:

  1. Create a temporary folder
  2. Move…

A few months ago I started to work on a new project and have been extremely busy with it (this is one of the reasons I haven’t posted anything here and on the other platforms). The project is about creating an online appointment booking service for small businesses. I reviewed a lot of similar services and came to the conclusion that they are pretty difficult to use and I didn’t find the features that I think are essential in such a service. So I decided to design and develop one. …

This week the new “Advanced search” feature in Bookmark Ninja went live. Before its release users could run only an “exact phrase” search. With the new “Advanced search” they can also set options like “search all of the words” or “search any of the words”.

What was really interesting that the server side coding was not a big deal, but designing the client side UI took several days.

I saw many implementations of the advanced search in different apps, but I didn’t like really them. …

Quite a few users reached me out last year and requested this feature in Bookmark Ninja. If you have many old bookmarks in your bookmark manager then it can be a pretty useful tool to cleanup your stuffs. At first glance it seemed to be a very simple task. You just iterate through all the bookmarks and check each link if it returns 404 (page not found). If so you mark the bookmark by adding the “dead-link” tag. Then as I started to dig myself deeper into it, it turned out it wasn’t that easy.

How to check if a link is dead? — The easy part

One of the reasons I…

This year I implemented many new features in Bookmark Ninja. The majority of the new features were requested by the users but there were also some features that I decided to add. The new feature I’m currently working on is “sharing tabs”.

Currently all the bookmarks in Ninja are private by default. With “sharing tabs” users will be able to make a tab public and send the automatically generated link, that points to the tab, to anybody. The shared tab will be read-only.

There are several reasons why I’m very excited about this feature:

  1. With being able to share tabs…

I’ve found a great tool (isearchfrom.com) recently that emulates the Google search location. You have to enter the country where you search from, the language and you can even specify the device. Then you enter the words you are searching for and click on Search. You will get exactly the same search results if you were in the specified country.

What is it good for?

If you work on SEO and want people to find your website not just in your country, but in other countries as well, then you can check the Google search result position in the different countries. Since I started to…

Since Bookmark Ninja went into production last October I was asked several times what I do now. Some even said that it’s so cool that I can lay back and enjoy the money coming from Ninja without doing anything. Well, this is not the case. This is not the case at all. In this post I tried to collect the tasks I regularly have to deal with on a daily or weekly basis after Ninja went into production.

Doing support

Having just a good product is not enough to be successful. You have to provide good support, too. I prepared very detailed…
